WICHITA, Kan. — Newman was outpaced by Nebraska-Kearney 2-0 on Friday at Wilkins Field. The Jets put seven of their 13 shots on goal but were held scoreless, while UNK scored both goals in the second half.
How it Happened
Newman generated the first pressure with corner kicks at 3:56 and 4:41, and
Emma Kolbe followed with a shot on frame at 5:04 that Susie Bovaird saved. The Lopers worked back into the half with chances from Bella Spadavecchia, Serene Hamzeh and Daniella Iaquinta, while
Mya Campbell and
Victoria Sandoval each put attempts on target for the Jets before the midpoint of the half. The visitors then had their longest attacking stretch, hitting the woodwork at 21:10, forcing
Emma Lintecum into a save, and adding two corners before another shot went high at 30:41, while the Jets also forced saves on attempts by
Allison Hernandez and Campbell during that span. The half turned more physical late, with Hernandez receiving a yellow card at 25:15 and four fouls called between 27:28 and 35:19, before the teams reached halftime without a goal.
UNK created the first major shift of the second half when Shaeley Reichmuth scored at 50:04 to put the Jets behind 1-0, and Lintecum followed with saves on three Lopers shots before the 60th minute. Newman pushed back with shots from Hernandez and
Iveta Stefancinova around two corner kicks, with Bovaird saving Stefancinova's attempt at 68:37 to keep the score at 1-0. The closing stretch became more physical as fouls piled up, and the Jets generated a late push with a corner at 76:13, a Kolbe shot at 79:13, another Stefancinova shot saved at 80:56, and a corner at 81:28. UNK added a late goal from Aspen Steen at 88:17 and finished the half with a 2-0 final score.
