WICHITA, Kan. — Newman lost to Southern Nazarene 2-1 on Saturday at Wilkins Field. The Jets made a late push while trailing, recording four shots and four corner kicks, but could not find the equalizer.
How it Happened
Newman created early looks through
Skylur Staley and
Evan Butler, while Southern Nazarene had an attempt from Tiago Moreira before the first-half scoring opened. After the Jets received two yellow cards at 26:08, Moreira converted a penalty kick, but the Jets quickly worked back with corner kicks before Butler scored off
Gael Gonzalez's assist at 30:00 to tie the match 1-1. The half turned more physical from there, with multiple fouls and another Newman yellow card before Southern Nazarene missed a shot wide left. The Jets created the late pressure, getting shots from Gonzalez,
Tomas Melon and
Yohsuke Ono in the final minutes, but the match remained tied 1-1 at halftime.
With the match tied 1-1, Newman opened the second half with several chances, including attempts from
Ailton Fagner Da Silva, Ono and Staley in the first eight minutes. Southern Nazarene answered with shots from Miguel Duran, Pedro Belmont and Bekir Lekic, with
Guilherme Borges saving Belmont's effort and Lekic's shot. The Jets pressed again with five shots and two corner kicks, but Southern Nazarene went in front when Belmont scored off assists from Xavier Salisbury and Kaden Slaven for a 2-1 lead.
Daiki Okada added two Newman shots shortly after, and the Jets pushed late with four corner kicks and shots from Ono, Butler and Melon, but Southern Nazarene held on for the 2-1 final.
