HAYS, Kan.- The Jets wrapped up the weekend of MIAA play at Fort Hays State. The Jets fell to the Tigers in overtime, 91-83.
How It Happened:
- The Jets started off the game on an 11-4 run, with two three-pointers by
Thatcher McClure, a three-pointer and a basket by
Cyrus Shaw. Four straight free throws by Shaw would extend the Jets lead to 15-6. At the 12 minute mark, the Jets put together a 9-0 run to push their lead to 24-10. During this run,
Jordan Glenn-Hawkins scored three,
Kobe Freeman scored four, and
Syris Williams added two. The Tigers would later put together a 12-0 run to close the gap to 32-21, still in favor of the Jets, with two minutes remaining in the half. Shaw scored three straight to stop this run by the Tigers. FHSU would score the last basket of the half. The Jets held the 35-33 lead at half.
- Out of the half, McClure hit three free throws to kick off scoring. At the 18 minute mark, The Tigers took the lead at 42-41. The Jets reclaimed the lead at the 17:30 minute mark with a basket by
Sam Somerhalder. FHSU would then be able to claim a 52-47 lead with 13:30 remaining. At the halfway point, the Jets trailed by four points at 60-56. An 11-0 run to regain the lead 64-60. During this run, Shaw scored his 19th point of the contest. With 5:00 to play, the Tigers regained the lead at 69-66. Back-to-back three-pointers by Shaw would regain the lead for the Jets at 72-69. With 41 seconds remaining in the game, two free throws by FHSU would tie the game up at 72-72. This tie would hold for the remainder of the game, forcing overtime.
- Somerhalder scored the first points of overtime to give NU the 74-72 lead. FHSU was quick to tie the game up at 74 all. A three-pointer by Shaw pushed Newman to a 77-74 lead. FHSU would respond with a 9-0 run. This gave the Tigers the 83-77 lead with 2:19 to go in the overtime. Glenn-Hawkins hit two free throws to end this surge by the Tigers, making the score 83-79 with two to play. The Jets would trade off a few baskets with FHSU, but could not put together a run. The Tigers would close out the overtime on top. The Jets fell short, 91-83.
Player Notes:
- Shaw led the Jets with 30 points, a season high. Shaw also hit four three-pointers, going 4-7 from behind the arc.
- Somerhalder recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
- McClure added 12 points, hitting 3-5 from behind the arc.
The Jets are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Emporia State.
