WICHITA- Newman Baseball is hosting the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith for a weekend series. The Lions would take game one, 16-4.
How it Happened:
-In the first inning the Jets recorded back-to-back singles from
Collin Morris and
Kaynan Kaku. Arkansas-Fort Smith would score first and take the lead in the top of the second inning to give UAFS a 1-0 advantage.
-Arkansas-Fort Smith extended its lead in the top of the third inning with a four-run frame on three hits. This would give UAFS a 5-0 lead. Newman would respond in the bottom half of the inning.
Nicolas Ely reached with a walk and later scored when
Collin Morris tripled to left field for an RBI.
Anthony Cannavino followed with a single and
Peyton Mitchell drew a walk to put runners on base, but the rally would end with a strikeout. The Jets cut the deficit to 5-1 after three innings
-Arkansas–Fort Smith added to its lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on one hit to extend their lead to 7-1.
-Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning. Arkansas-Fort Smith added a run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Eisenhower, extending its lead to 8-1. Newman responded with a three-run inning in the bottom half.
Nicolas Ely drove in two runs with a double to left field, scoring
Justin Birch and
Brett Kocher. Later in the inning,
Kaynan Kaku delivered a two-RBI single to center field that brought Ely home and moved
Collin Morris to third. The Jets recorded four hits in the inning and cut the deficit to 8-4 heading into the seventh.
-Arkansas–Fort Smith extended its lead in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs on two hits pushing the score to 12-4. Arkansas–Fort Smith continued to extend its lead in the top of the eighth inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Eisenhower delivered a two-RBI double to right to push the score to 16-4. Newman managed one hit in the bottom half when
Carter Andreozzi doubled to left field. The Lions would take game one, 16-4.
