Jets drop midweek series to MSSU

WICHTA- Newman kicked off their week of play at Missouri Southern. This is the Jets second midweek match up against the Lions. Game one went in favor of MSSU, 12-4. Today, the Lions secured the series with a 22-9 final score.

How it Happened:
- Nicolas Ely led off the game, with a leadoff home run on the first pitch. This home run gave the Jets an early 1-0 lead. MSSU responded quickly, taking the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after they scored six runs off of six hits. The Jets cut into this deficit in the top of the second. Collin Morris began the inning with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Justin Birch that moved Morris to second. Later in the inning, Louis Coca singled to center and scored Morris to make the score 6-2. Ely followed this with a walk. Colton Holland would then single to center to score both Ely and Coca. This allowed the Jets to cut the deficit to 6-3. In the bottom of the second, the Jets defense behind Ryan Othen held off MSSU with no hits, facing just three batters. Morris would connect on the Jets second home run of the game, taking the score to 6-4. MSSU would be able to push around one run in the bottom half of the third to extend their lead out to three runs at 7-4.
- The Jets kept their bats rolling in the fourth. Coca was the first base runner for the Jets in the inning after connecting on a single. Ely would then draw his second walk of the day. Holland was able to single to load up the bases. Carter Andreozzi followed this up with his own single, scoring both Coca and Ely. This cut the deficit to just one run, 7-6. MSSU continued to respond, one run off one hit in the bottom of the fourth gave the Lions an 8-6 edge over the Jets. Newman would respond in the fifth. Morris led off the inning with a double. A single from Coca would score Morris to make it a one run ball game. Ely would again reach base, this time singling, which pushed Coca over to second. Holland would then hit a two RBI double, scoring both Ely and Coca to regain the lead at 9-8. This was the Jets first lead since leading 1-0 in the top of the first. The Lions were able to put together a huge bottom of the fifth to retake the lead from NU. Six runs scored off of six hits would allow MSSU to take the 14-6 lead.
- The Jets were unable to cut into this deficit in the top of the sixth. The Lions kept their bats rolling in the bottom of the sixth, scoring eight runs on two hits with one of those hits being a grand slam. After six, the Lions held the 22-9 lead. Newman was unable to cut into the deficit in the seventh inning, ending the game through seven. The Jets fell, 22-9.
