TAHLEQUAH, Okla.- Newman Baseball traveled to Tahlequah Oklahoma to face Northeastern State in a weekend series. The RiverHawks would take game one, 3-2.
How it Happened:
-Newman would get the board early as
Anthony Cannavino drove in
Kaynan Kaku with an RBI single in the top of the first. Northeastern State would load the bases in the bottom of the first inning, but Newman escaped with a flyout to leave three runners on the bases.
-Newman added to their lead in the second as
Peyton Mitchell launched a solo home run to left field.
Kayden Dawson and
Louis Coca drew walks earlier in the inning, but the Northeastern State pitcher held Newman with a pair of strikeouts. In the bottom half of the second,
Andrew Hudson retired the RiverHawks in order with a pop up, strikeout, and groundout.
-Newman continued to hold a 2-0 lead through six innings as both pitchers controlled the game.
Alex Gillig would control it for the Jets coming in during the third inning. Northeastern State would take the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs in the inning. With two outs
John Sjoberg would come in to pitch for the Jets. Jaxon Gregory would then deliver a two RBI double to left center, driving in two more runs to give the RiverHawks a 3-2 lead. Newman continued to fight in the top half with two hits, including a double from
Louis Coca, but Northeastern State held on to keep the advantage heading into the eighth. Northeastern State would keep the lead and take game one of the series, 3-2.
