BOLIVAR, Mo.- The Jets traveled to Bolivar, Missouri to face the Bearcats for a weekend series. The Jets played a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18th. The Jets fell to the Bearcats in game one, 18-12 and game two, 5-4.
Game one vs Southwest Baptist: NU 12, SBU 18
-SBU took an early lead in the first inning, scoring twice making it 2-0. In the second inning, the Bearcats extended its lead with four runs.
-Newman responded in the third inning with
Nicolas Ely doubling and scoring on
Collin Morris' RBI single.
Carter Andreozzi added another run with a fielder's choice, reducing the deficit to 6-2 after three innings.
-Southwest Baptist added one run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, increasing its lead to 7-2.
-The Jets surged ahead in the fifth inning with a six-run rally.
Anthony Cannavino hit a three-run homer, and
Justin Birch doubled in another run.
Riley Kujawa reached on an error, bringing in two more runs. Newman led 8-7 after five innings.
-SBU would answer in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice. In the seventh inning, Newman reclaimed the lead. Ely tripled to score
Justin Birch, followed by Morris' RBI single to score Ely. Newman led 10-9 through seven innings.
-The eighth inning saw the Bearcats explode for nine runs. Southwest Baptist led 18-11 after eight innings. Newman added a run in the ninth inning when
Thomas Munn singled to bring home
Kaynan Kaku. SBU would take the game, 18-12.
Game two: NU 4, SBU 5
-Southwest Baptist took an early lead in the second inning, putting SBU up 2-0. In the third inning, the Bearcats extended their lead to 3-0.
-The Jets responded in the fourth inning.
Justin Birch reached first on an error and later scored.
Brett Kocher and
Kayden Dawson also crossed the plate on an error, and
Zac Becker's groundout brought
Colton Holland home, tying the game at 4-4. Southwest Baptist regained the lead with two unearned runs, ending the fourth inning with a 5-4 advantage.
-Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, with Newman unable to capitalize on opportunities in the seventh. The final score was Southwest Baptist 5, Newman 4.
