WICHITA, Kan. - Baseball fell short in a tightly contested 11-10 loss to Northwest Missouri State on Friday afternoon. The Jets rallied with four runs in the ninth and another four in the 13th inning, but the Bearcats secured the win with a five-run 13th.
How it Happened:
NW opened the scoring in the fourth inning with two runs on a single by Frank Gall, taking advantage of a fielding error. Through four innings, the Bearcats led the Jets 2-0. Newman responded in the fifth inning when
Justin Birch doubled and
Peyton Mitchell followed with an RBI double, cutting the deficit to 2-1 through five innings. In the seventh inning, Birch led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Riley Kujawa, tying the game at 2-2 through seven innings.
Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning, maintaining the 2-2 tie. The ninth inning saw a flurry of activity. NW plated four runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Michael Good and Sam Wornson. The Jets answered with four runs of their own, beginning with a double from Birch followed by a two-run double from Mitchell.
Anthony Cannavino and Kujawa also contributed RBI hits, sending the game to extra innings tied at 6-6.After three scoreless extra innings, the Bearcats scored five unearned runs in the 13th inning, capitalizing on errors and a series of fielder's choices.
Newman rallied in the bottom of the 13th, scoring four runs. Cannavino, Kujawa, and
Thomas Munn each drove in a run, but the effort fell short. NW Missouri secured the 11-10 victory in 13 innings.
