Last Time OutÂ
The Jets traveled to Emporia, Kansas for a series against Emporia State. The Hornets would take the conference series (19-4, 16-1, 23-5). Newman traveled to Ada, Oklahoma for a midweek game on Tuesday, April 7th to face East Central University. ECU would take the game 12-11.Â
In game one against Emporia State, the Hornets jumped out early with three first-inning home runs to take a 6-0 lead and never looked back. They added two more runs in the third, exploded for nine in the fourth, and extended the lead to 18-0 by the fifth. Newman got on the board in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from
Braden McNeill and an RBI single by
Carter Andreozzi. The Jets added two more in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single from
Riley Kujawa and a Hornets error. Emporia State took the game through seven innings, 19-4.Â
Emporia State took control early in the second game with a first-inning grand slam to jump ahead 4-0. Newman responded in the bottom half, as
Carter Andreozzi scored on a groundout by
Kaynan Kaku to make it 4-1. The Hornets extended their lead with a solo home run in the second and third, then added back-to-back solo shots in the fourth and another in the fifth to push it to 9-1. Newman managed a few hits, including a double from
Justin Birch and a single from
Riley Kujawa. Emporia State would take game two and the series through seven innings, 16-1.Â
In the final game against the Hornets, Emporia State jumped out early, scoring twice on wild pitches before erupting for seven runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead. They added five more in the third to make it 14-0. Newman answered in the bottom of the third with three runs, highlighted by a double from
Nicolas Ely and a Hornets error that brought in two more. However, Emporia State kept the pressure on, adding three runs in the fourth and six in the fifth to extend the lead to 23-3. The Jets scored two more on sacrifice flies in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Hornets closed out a 23-5 win.Â
In the midweek game against East Central University, Newman struck first as
Nicolas Ely walked, advanced on a single from
Carter Andreozzi, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kaynan Kaku. East Central answered quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Jets responded in the second, tying the game at 3-3 behind an RBI from
Riley Kujawa and a run scored by
Kayden Dawson off a Tigers error. East Central regained control with three runs in the inning to go up 6-3. After two scoreless innings, Newman rallied in the fifth with key hits from
Peyton Mitchell and
Justin Birch to take a 7-6 lead, but the Tigers answered with three runs to move ahead 9-7. Newman continued to fight back, scoring in the sixth, seventh, and eighth including a solo home run by Mitchell and a game-tying walk to even the score at 11-11. However, East Central pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. ECU would take the game 12-11.
