WICHITA - Newman defeated Northeastern State 1-0 on Thursday at Wilkins Field.
Tomas Melon scored at 78:08 off an assist from
Higor Werneck, providing the only goal in a match where both teams finished with 17 shots.
How it happened:
The Jets generated the first looks, with
Mateus Moreira forcing Victor Jaunay into a save at 2:14 and Okada and Moreira adding attempts before the 12-minute mark. The RiverHawks pushed back through the middle of the half, but
Guilherme Borges saved shots by Miguel Carrasquinho, Harry Tremblez and Carter Adams, and NU mixed in chances from
Evan Butler and
Vincent Edgell during that stretch. After Borges stopped Joshua Adeyemi at 36:23, the Jets put a late
Io Shono shot on frame and had
Kaisei Nagayoshi take the final attempt before the half ended scoreless.
The Jets opened the second half by earning a pair of early corners, and Borges kept the match scoreless when he saved Harry Tremblez's shot at 56:38. The next stretch included a
Max Wetzel shot saved at 57:32, another NU corner, a Borges save on Joshua Adeyemi at 62:46, and later Jets attempts from
Ailton Fagner Da Silva and
Yohsuke Ono. After the RiverHawks generated chances through Miguel Carrasquinho and a 73:11 corner, Melon scored off Werneck's assist at 78:08 to put NU ahead 1-0. This was Melon's first goal of the season. NSU pushed late with attempts from Carrasquinho and Carter Adams, but Borges saved Adams' 86:58 shot and the Jets closed out the 1-0 victory.
