EDMOND, Okla. — Newman came up short to Oklahoma Christian 3-0 on Tuesday at Eagles' Nest. The Jets pushed the final set to extra points after taking a lead in set three despite a four-point deficit, but fell by set scores of 23-25, 22-25, 26-28.
How it happened:
Avery Kelley opened the set with a kill from
Madalyn Hoot, but the Eagles answered with five straight points, including two Chloe Jones kills and a Lauren Cary ace, to move in front 5-1. Newman worked back within 6-5 behind kills from
Hannah Tymitz and
Kierny Follmer and a
Charissa Ninan ace, then continued to chase as OC pushed the margin to 15-11 before the Jets used a Follmer-
Isabella Lamb block and another Ninan ace to get back within 15-13. Newman pulled within 18-17 after a Follmer kill and two Eagles attack errors, and later tied the set at 22-22 on a Lamb kill and a Follmer-Tymitz block. OC reached set point at 24-22, and after Follmer answered with a kill, Leah Duncan closed the set for the Eagles, 25-23.
The Jets scored the first two points of the second set and led 6-5 after a Follmer kill, but OC took the next five points, including four straight on Macey Nehring's serve, to move ahead 10-6. Newman pulled within 12-11 behind a
Sky Miller kill, an Eagles attack error and Hoot's ace, but OC rebuilt its lead to 17-12 and later held a 19-15 edge. Follmer's kill and
Reese Johnson's ace helped Newman cut the deficit to 19-17, and kills by
Ashlyn Warburton and Kelley helped bring the set even at 21-21. The Eagles answered with three straight points to reach 24-21, and after Miller's kill kept the Jets in the set, Chloe Jones closed the 25-22 set with a kill.
OC started the third set with kills from Chloe Jones, Lauren Cary and Payton Cash and later moved ahead 11-7 before Newman put together a five-point push. Miller's kill gave the Jets the serve, and with Hoot at the line, a block by Lamb and Kelley, Kelley's kill, Kelley's solo block and an Eagles setting error put Newman in front 12-11. The Jets later moved ahead 16-13 and held a 23-21 edge after a Miller kill and a Miller-Kelley block, then Lamb's kill made it 24-22 before an OC point and service error left Newman up 25-23. Follmer's kill made it 26-24, but the Eagles tied the set at 26-26 and finished with a 28-26 set win.
