WICHITA — Newman lost to Emporia State 3-0 on Tuesday at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets dropped the sets 23-25, 18-25 and 22-25 while finishing with 34 kills and a .157 hitting percentage.
How it happened:
The opening set stayed tight through an 8-8 tie before ESU scored three straight points, including a Jade Xu kill and two Newman attack errors, to go ahead 11-8. A kill by
Isabella Lamb stopped that stretch, then the Jets won five more points on
Madalyn Hoot's serve, with
Reese Johnson,
Hannah Tymitz, Lamb and
Avery Kelley recording kills as Newman moved ahead 14-11. NU later led 17-12 after a Hoot kill and Johnson service ace, but the Hornets worked back to tie the set at 19-19, and the teams traded points to 21-21. ESU scored the next three points to reach 24-21, and Newman got back within 24-23 on a service error and
Kierny Follmer's ace before a service error ended the set at 25-23.
In the second set the Jets trailed 9-5 after
Ashlyn Warburton's kill, and ESU answered with four straight points, including consecutive Lavra Krizanic kills, to move ahead 13-5. Newman worked back into the set after Kelley's kill made it 15-9, with
MaddyLynn Shumway serving four straight points on an ace, two Hornets errors, and Lamb's kill from Shumway to cut the margin to 15-13. ESU stopped the push at 16-13, stretched the lead to 20-16, and added three straight points to reach 23-16 before closing the second set 25-18.
After the Hornets moved ahead 7-5 in set three, Warburton's kill and a Newman service ace tied the third set at 7-7 before ESU went back in front 8-7 on a service error. The Jets then pushed ahead 12-9 as an ESU attack error tied it, Lamb put down a kill, another Hornets error made it 10-8, and Hoot's kill capped the stretch after Maja Ciosek had cut it to 10-9. Newman built the lead to 16-12 on
Priscilla Raschen's kill, but ESU scored the next four points with kills by Mia Frisbie, Brooklynn Weaver and Sara Barbosa and a Frisbie ace to tie it at 16-16. Warburton later tied the set at 18-18 with a kill, but the Hornets moved in front 23-20, and after Lamb's kill and an ESU bad set pulled Newman within 23-22, a Frisbie kill and a Newman bad set gave ESU the set 25-22.
