Overtime Penalty Kick Sinks Jets, 1-0

WICHITA - Stephen Williams held his own in his debut as goal keeper for Newman, but a St. Edward's penalty kick in overtime was enough to sink the Jets, 1-0, on a cold Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field.

Playing in game-time temperatures hovering around the 40 degree mark, both teams engaged in a defensive battle. Newman (2-8-2, 1-3) put up eight shots, while St. Edward's (2-6-2, 2-1) put up six, but neither team could find a way to score, as they took a 0-0 draw into the halftime break.

The visiting Hilltoppers turned up the pressure offensively in the second 45 minutes, putting up 10 shots and holding the Jets to just three, but again both keepers stood strong to force an extra frame after 90 minutes of scoreless soccer.

Newman had one of its best opportunities of the afternoon to score early in the overtime period, but SEU keeper Matt Moore was able to make the save and secure the shutout for the Hilltoppers. Four minutes into the overtime period, SEU's Scott Strickland was fouled on an attempt to score inside the penalty box, and was awarded a penalty kick. Strickland was able to put the ball past Williams and into the back corner of the goal, and sent the Hilltoppers back to Austin, Texas with a 1-0 overtime win.

Eight yellow cards and a combined 40 fouls were issued in the match. St. Edward's was the recipient of five cards and 22 fouls, while Newman was assessed three cards and 18 fouls.

With the loss, the Jets drop to 2-8-2 on the season, and 1-3 in the Heartland Conference. Newman will return to action Friday when they host St. Mary's to open the second half of the Heartland Conference rotation. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Wilkins Field.
