Women's Soccer Blasts Dustdevils, 5-0

WICHITA - Junior Amanda Knabe and freshman Mallory Hurst each scored two goals as Newman breezed past Texas A&M International, 5-0, Friday evening at Wilkins Field. Freshman Lauren Wilson also scored a goal in the match.

Newman (6-5-3, 4-2-1) scored early and often in the match. The Jets needed just better than six minutes to net their first goal of the game when Mallory Hurst connected with Amanda Knabe on a cross pass. Knabe pushed the ball past TAMIU goalkeeper Mary Jo Hall from the right corner, and into the back of the net to give the Jets a 1-0 advantage.

Texas A&M International (0-13-1, 0-7) kept the Jets off the scoreboard for the next 25 minutes, but Mallory Hurst took matters into her own hands to round out the first half. Hurst's first goal of the game came on a pass from Ashley Ramos. Hurst shot from 10 yards out, catching Hall off guard and giving the Jets a 2-0 edge. Hurst struck again eight minutes later, this time on a pass from Megan Hostick. After her first attempt was deflected by a Dustdevil defender, but Hurst was able to regain the ball and score from eight yards out. Her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season, was enough to give the Jets a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

The Jets were far from finished in the seond half. Lauren Wilson needed just over two minutes to strike gold. A pass from Megan Hostick found Mallory Hurst, who then found Wilson open for a close-range goal to extend Newman's lead to 4-0 with 43 minutes still to play.

Newman struck once more in the match, when Knabe beat Hall one-on-one from five yards out for her second goal of the game, and ninth of the season, that gave Newman the 5-0 edge they would go on to win by. The Jets dominated the Dustdevils in all aspects of the game, out-shooting the guests 23-5, and earning eight corner kicks while limiting TAMIU to one. NU keeper Christina Farid had a relatively easy night, saving all three shots on goal, while posting a shutout.

With the win, the Jets improve to 6-5-3 on the season, and 4-2-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will be back in action Sunday when they host Incarnate Word in a 1 p.m. match.
