Jets Battle Dustdevils to Scoreless Tie

WICHITA - A combined 21 shots on goal resulted in a scoreless tie between the Newman and Texas A&M International men's soccer teams Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field. Newman's Stephen Williams made his final game at Wilkins Field a memorable one, posting 10 saves in his second-consecutive shutout.

While most scoreless draws indicate a lack of offense, Sunday afternoon's tie was a battle between the two keepers. Newman (3-9-3, 2-4-1) put up 11 shots on goal, but TAMIU keeper Luis Rincon saved each one. Meanwhile, Texas A&M International (5-6-3, 4-2-2) hoisted 10 shots on goal, but Williams was on the scene in all of them.

The teams combined for 38 total shots, 19 coming from each side.

Prior to the start of the game, Newman honored its seniors, as Joe Gerant, Thiago Baby, Stephen Williams, Brian Arvizo, and student assistant coach Brian Alvarez all were participating in their final home game as Jets.

With the tie, Newman moves to 3-9-3 on the season, and 2-4-1 in conference play. They will play their final three games of the season on the road, starting with a trip to St. Edward's for a 3 p.m. match on Friday.
