SAN ANTONIO, Texas -
Amanda Knabe's late goal broke a scoreless tie, and gave the Newman women's soccer team it's second-straight win, and its fourth win in six outings, in a 1-0 decision over St. Mary's Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.
On paper, Newman (8-5-4, 6-2-2) was the more aggressive team throughout the match. The Jets took 16 shots, eight of which ended up on goal, while St. Mary's (3-12-1, 3-6) took 10 shots. Of those 10, only two were on-goal, making for an easy outing for NU keeper
Christina Farid, who posted her second-consecutive shutout.
St. Mary's keeper Mari Edwards had a shutout of her own going late into the game, but in the 87th minute, Newman's
Lauren Benning passed the ball to Knabe, who snuck the ball past Edwards and into the back of the net for the only goal of the match. The Rattlers were unable to respond in the final three minutes of the game, and Newman escaped with a 1-0 win.
With the win, the Jets improve to 8-5-4 on the season, and 6-2-2 in Heartland Conference play. They will return home for their final two games of the season, starting with a 4 p.m. match Friday afternoon against Dallas Baptist.
