Volleyball Comes Up Empty at PSU

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Newman volleyball team came up empty at the Pitt State Volleyball Classic, which concluded Saturday at John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan. The Jets dropped matches to Missouri Southern, Texas A&M-Commerce, Abilene Christian, and concluded the tournament with a loss to fifth-ranked Central Missouri.

Missouri Southern: 3, Newman: 0

The Jets gave MIAA foe Missouri Southern all it wanted in two of the three sets in Friday's tournament opener, but a sloppy second set proved to be the difference as the Lions swept Newman, 3-0 (29-27, 25-15, 25-22). Freshman Jeana Farruggia led the Jets offensively with nine kills in the match. Farruggia also posted a .350 hitting percentage to lead the Newman, which hit just .159 as a team. Playing the libero position for the first time this season, junior Chelsey Potter led the Jets with 10 digs, while Caroline Painter led Newman in sets, finishing with 32 assists in the loss.

Texas A&M-Commerce: 3, Newman: 2
Newman rallied to force a fifth set, but couldn't avenge an early-season loss to the Lions in a heart-breaking 3-2 (25-13, 25-13, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12) loss to Texas A&M Commerce in Friday afternoon's match-up. Angie Bennett and Lauren Poe each posted double-doubles to lead the Jets. Bennett finished with 14 kills and 15 digs, while Poe added 14 kills and 13 digs. Chelsey Potter and Amy Shorette also added 15 digs each to lead the team's defensive effort. Ashley Myers finished with a season-high 33 assists as Newman's primary setter.

Abilene Christian: 3, Newman 1
Four Jets finished with 14 or more digs as Newman dropped a 3-1 decision to Abilene Christian in Saturday's first game. A .093 hitting percentage and 29 attack errors hampered the Jets throughout the match. Chelsey Potter posted her fourth double-double of the season in a 12-kill, 18-dig performance. Lauren Poe added 11 kills, while Brittany Krantwashl finished with 10 kills of her own. Defensively, Angie Bennett's 19 digs led the Jets, while Amy Shorette added 16 digs and Caroline Painter finished with a 35-assist, 14-dig double-double.

(5) Central Missouri: 3, Newman: 0
Newman played with the nation's fifth-ranked team for one set, but the fifth-ranked Central Missouri Jennies won the second and third sets in convincing fashion to complete the sweep of the Jets. Kelly Larson led the Jets offensively, finishing the match with eight kills, and was the only Jet to finish with more than five kills. Defensively, Angie Bennett finished with a team high 11 digs, while Caroline Painter posted 11 assists.

The Jets return to action when they resume Heartland Conference play Oct. 8 by hosting Dallas Baptist in a 7 p.m. match at Fugate Gymnasium.
