WICHITA - Two second half goals spelled doom for the Newman men's soccer team, falling 2-0 to Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
Northeastern State (6-2) forced Newman (2-6-2) to play defensive soccer throughout the majority of the match. The Riverhawks gave up just six shots to the Jets, and only one of those was on goal, and saved by NSU keeper Matt Murrell. Meanwhile, NSU put up eight shots in the first half, and added six in the second frame, two of which found their way past NU keeper
James Esquivel and into the net for goals.
The Riverhawks struck first just eight minutes into the second half when Justin Cleland connected with Harrison Kutz on a close range shot off a corner kick from the right side of the goal. Kutz pushed the ball past Esquivel for NSU's first goal of the game.
The visitors struck again late in the game, when Dustin Lyons ran down a ball near the end line, and passed it in to Sam Vernalls. Vernalls then passed the ball back to Lyons, who returned the favor, feeding Vernalls for the Riverhawks' second goal of the match, and giving NSU the 2-0 edge the would hold on to win by.
Northeastern State out-shot the Jets 14-6 in the match, while Esquivel finished with six saves.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 2-6-2 on the season. They return to action Friday when they host Incarnate Word in a 7 p.m. match-up at Wilkins Field.
