WICHITA -
Chelsey Potter and
Angie Bennett each posted double-doubles as Newman picked up its second Heartland Conference win, defeating Dallas Baptist 3-1 Thursday night inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Dallas Baptist (8-11, 2-3) came out ready to play. After a see-saw battle to start the first set, the Patriots took an 8-4 lead on an Erin Black service ace. Newman (5-15, 2-3) saw their deficit increast to 17-8 as DBU's Amanda Emmert led an eight-point rally from behind the service line. The Jets crawled back to within six at 19-13, but DBU held on for a 25-17 win to take a 1-0 advantage.
Newman countered in the second set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead thanks in part to a five-point rally set up by
Brianna Witsman's effort from the service line. Three different Jets scored kills during that rally. Slowly but surely the Patriots crept back into the set, tying the match at 15-15, but three-straight points by the Jets gave Newman the cushion it needed to even the match with a 25-21 second-frame win.
The third set was a story of momentum swings. After falling behind 3-0 early, Newman rallied to take a 4-3 lead thanks to three Patriot errors, and a
Lauren Poe kill. The match remained deadlocked at 9-9 when Poe engineered a mini-rally from the service line after a kill from
Caroline Painter. Poe followed an attack error by DBU's Kaylyn Frink with an ace to give the Jets a 12-9 edge, and forcing DBU coach Cathy Ray to call a timeout.
Whatever Ray said in the timeout was enough to motivate her Patriots, as DBU stormed back to take a 14-12 lead. The Patriots increased their lead to 20-16, and seemed to have the set in hand at 23-20 when Newman head coach
Joanna Pryor called a timeout.
This time it was Pryor's words of wisdom, two DBU errors, two kills by
Chelsey Potter, and an ace by
Caroline Painter that fueled the Jets to a 6-1 rally that gave the hosts a 2-1 lead in the match.
Neither team left anything behind in the fourth set. The two squads battled to a 12-12 tie before Newman tried to pull away, taking two-point leads at several points in the set, but the Patriots battled back, typing the match at 18-18 when Potter stepped to the service line, and pieced together a four-point rally that gave Newman a 22-18 lead. Dallas Baptist snuck back to within two at 22-20, but the Jets slammed the door on DBU with a 3-1 rally to end the match, and seal the win for Newman.
Offensively, Poe led the Jets with 15 kills behind a season-high .406 attack percentage. Poe also added three digs and two block-assists in the Newman Victory. Potter and
Angie Bennett each posted double-doubles in Newman's fifth win of the season. Potter notched her fifth double-double of the season with an 11-kill, 18 dig outing, while Bennett added 13 kills and 11 digs.
Caroline Painter was Newman's go-to setter, finishing with 35 assists.
DBU's May Allen led all setters with 47 assists in the match. DBU's Lauren Zegarelli and Kaylyn Frink each added 14 kills for the Patriots.
As a team, the Jets hit .192, and forced 30 DBU attack errors, while the Patriots hit .180 and forced 20 Newman attack errors.
With the win, the Jets improve to 5-15 on the season, and 2-3 in the Heartland Conference, while the Patriots fall to 8-11 on the season, and 2-3 in Heartland Conference play.
Newman is back in action Saturday for two matches. The Jets will take on defending conference champion Texas-Permian Basin in a noon match, before hosting Heartland Conference newcomer Arkansas-Fort Smith at 4 p.m inside Fugate Gymnasium.
