SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The 25th season of Newman men's soccer got off to a rough start Sunday as the Jets dropped a 3-0 decision to Drury to open the season.
Drury's first goal came just over three minutes into the match as Drury's Micah Whorton drained an unassisted shot from the left corner, three yards in front of the goal. Newman would become very familar over the course of the game, as he would be responsible for all three Panther goals. Whorton struck again on an unassisted goal five yards out to give Drury a 2-0 edge at the 30:01 mark, and added his final goal at the 57:21 mark to give the hosts the margin they would go on to win by.
Newman goalkeeper
James Esquivel recorded 13 saves as the only Jet in goal. Drury out-shot the Jets 29-6 in the loss.
The Jets will look to get back on track Wednesday when they host arch-rival and NAIA foe Friends in the "War on 54" as part of alumni week, celebrating 25 seasons of Jets men's soccer.
