Jets Force Tie at Sterling, 1-1

STERLING, Kan. - Joe Gerant scored his third goal of the season as the Newman men's soccer team tied Sterling College, 1-1, Tuesday evening in Sterling, Kan.

Sterling struck first, using just over six minutes to net their first goal when SC's Justin Martens deflected a shot off the cross bar and past NU keeper James Esquivel to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

The Jets countered late in the half when Taylor Jackson fed Brian Arvizo, who set up Joe Gerant for a header from three yards out. Gerant powered the ball past SC keeper Nic Martinez, and tied the match at 1-1 with seven minutes left in the opening period.

Both teams engaged in a defensive stalemate in the second half. Newman fired five shots in the second half while Sterling shot four, but both keepers stood strong and forced the game into extra time. Both teams had opportunities in the extra frame, but after two overtimes neither team was able to score, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Newman out-shot the Warriors 16-14. The Jets peppered Martinez for nine shots on goal, but could only sneak one past him.

With the tie, the Jets move to 1-3-1 on the season. They begin Heartland Conference play Friday when they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in a 7 p.m. contest.
