SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Newman came up on the bad end of a see-saw volleyball battle, falling 3-2 to St. Mary's Friday evening at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
St. Mary's came out firing in the first set. The Rattlers posted a .426 hitting percentage and committed just two errors on their way to a 25-16 win. Newman countered in the second set, taking advantage of nine Rattler errors on their way to a 25-23 win. St. Mary's continued the see-saw theme, hitting .310 in the set compared to Newman's .027 hitting percentage on their way to another 25-16 win, and taking a 2-1 advantage.
The Jets weren't done yet, Newman forced the Rattlers into seven errors and hit .214 in the fourth frame on their way to a 25-22 win that forced the decisive fifth set, where the Rattlers got the final say. St. Mary's jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the final set, and never looked back on their way to a 15-7 win.

Sarah Bailey each recorded 10 kills in the match to lead the Jets, while
Angie Bennett and
Brianna Witsman added eight kills.
Caroline Painter was Newman's go-to setter with 19 assists in the match, while
Amy Shorette led the Jets with 13 kills.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-7 on the season, and 0-1 in Heartland Conference play. They return to action Saturday when they travel across San Antonio to take on the Incarnate Word Cardinals in a 2 p.m. contest.
