Friends Takes Highway 54 Cup, 3-2

WICHITA - Two goals by Joe Gerant weren't enough as Friends knocked off Newman, 3-2, in the annual War on 54 rivalry match Wednesday evening in front of 573 fans at Wilkins Field.

The Jets came out in an up-tempo style of play, and needed just over 11 minutes to net their first goal of the season as Renato Ramlochan connected with Gerant from the left corner of the box, seven yards out of the goal, and put Newman up 1-0. That same duo would strike again less than eight minutes later, this time Ramlochan's shot was blocked by Friends keeper Brady Kaufman, and deflected to Gerant, who put the ball in the net to give the Jets a 2-0 advantage just 19:30 into the game.

Friends struck back less than two minutes later, scoring their first goal when Brent Hobson's shot from three yards out near the right corner snuck past Jets keeper James Esquivel, narrowing Newman's margin to 2-1.

A bizzare turn of events less than two minutes before the half resulted in Friends' second goal of the game. In a scramble for the ball near the net, a pass bounced off of a Newman defender and straight to Friends' Gabrial Parham, who punched the ball into the net from nearly point blank range, and tied the match at 2-2.

The Falcons would strike once more, and it was enough to decide the match. This time, Corey Oullette connected with Chase Billings for a header directly in front of the net and pushed the ball past Esquivel to give Friends the 3-2 lead they would go on to win by.

To say Wednesday evening's match was intense would be an understatement, as nine yellow cards and a red card were issued throughout the course of play. Newman out-shot Friends 14-13.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 0-2 on the season. They will be back in action Sunday as they host the Thunderwolves of Colorado State-Pueblo in a noon match at Wilkins Field.
