WICHITA - The Newman women's volleyball broke a seven match losing streak with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-12) sweep of Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets posted a season-high .382 hitting percentage in their first conference win of the season.
Newman (4-9, 1-3) set the tone in the first match, hitting at a .300 clip and forcing Texas A&M International (2-15, 1-3) into eight attack errors for the 25-20 win. The second set turned into an offensive battle which saw both teams hit above .320, and the Jets rallied late for the 25-23 win. Newman put the match away in the third set, hitting a season-high single set percentage of .480 behind 15 kills, to win 25-12, and clench the match.
Two freshmen stepped up to fill the shoes of
Chelsey Potter, who did not play in the match due to illness.
Jeana Farruggia and
Sarah Bailey each recorded 11 kills in the match; a new career high for Farruggia, and one short of tying Bailey's career number. Farruggia also posted a career-high .562 hitting percentage in the Jets' sweep.
Caroline Painter led all setters in the match, finishing with 39 assists in the match. Defensively
Angie Bennett cleaned up eight digs to lead the Jets, while
Amy Shorette and Abbee Wilder each finished with seven digs; a new career high for Widler.
As a team, the Jets hit .382, and held the Dustdevils to a .167 hitting percentage. Newman committed 11 attack errors, while forcing TAMIU into 16 miscues at the net. The Jets also out-blocked the Dustdevils 7-5.
With the win, the Jets improve to 4-9 on the season, and 1-3 in Heartland Conference play. They will square off in non-conference re-matches this week, hosting Rockhurst on Tuesday before Fort Hays State pays a visit to Fugate Gymnasium on Wednesday. Both games are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
