LAREDO, Texas - A late goal by
Mallory Hurst lifted Newman to its first Heartland Conference win of the season in a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field in Laredo, Texas.
Battling a thermometer that topped out at 96 degrees in southern Texas, the Dustdevils (0-8-1, 0-2) made the first move, needing just 10 minutes to net their first goal of the game when Sandy Hernandez launched a shot from 28 yards out to give the hosts the early 1-0 edge.
Newman (3-4-2) answered back 12 minutes later when
Lauren Wilson connected with Knabe on a cross directly in front of the goal from short range to tie the match at 1-1 near the halfway mark of the first half.
TAMIU snagged the lead away just three minutes later when Brittany Merritt fed Rachel Carransa from 12 yards out to give the Dustdevils the 2-1 lead they would take into the halftime intermission.
The Jets stole the show in the second half, netting an equalizer just five minutes into the second period when Knabe struck again, this time taking a feed from Lauren Bening on a cross in front of the goal from six yards out to tie the game at 2-2.
Newman's defense took over from there, holding TAMIU without a shot for the duration of the second half. The match remained knkotted at 2-2, and appeared to be heading toward overtime when Vistoria Hostick's pass connected with Hurst, whose shot bounced off the cross bar, and into the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
The Jets out-shot the Dustdevils 20-3 in the game.
With the win, the Jets improve to 3-4-2 on the season. They are back in action next weekend, starting Friday when they host St. Mary's in a 7 p.m. contest, before hosting St. Edward's Sunday at 1 p.m.
