WICHITA - The Newman men's soccer team dropped their third-straight match Sunday afternoon in a 4-0 loss to Colorado State-Pueblo at Wilkins Field.
The Thunderwolves drew first blood when CSUP's Corey Cullen took control of the ball, and snuck it past NU keeper
James Esquivel unassisted, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead just 16:43 into the game. They added another unassisted goal nearly 10 minutes later when Robert Kinsey beat Esquivel in a one-on-one situation just two yards in front of the goal to give the red-clad Thunderwolves a 2-0 advantage they would hold into the halftime.
A defensive battle ensued in the second half. After giving CSUP 10 shots in the firsthalf, the Jets gave the visitors just four second half shots, but two of them went into the net. Newman gave a goal away at the 79:11 mark when a pass from CSUP's Alex Zemach bounced off an NU defender and into the net for an own goal. The Thunderwolves added an insurance goal four minutes later when Brended Hughes struck from six yards out, giving CSUP the 4-0 edge they would go on to win by.
CSU-Pueblo out-shot the Jets 14-8 in the match, as the Jets fell to 0-3 on the season. They will return to action next Sunday when they host regional foe Rockhurst in a 3 p.m. match at Wilkins FIeld.
