DALLAS, Texas - The Newman volleyball team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-19, 16-14) win over Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center in Dallas, Texas. The win completes a season-sweep of the Patriots for the 2010 season.
Newman (10-13, 5-3 Heartland) set the see-saw into play in a first set which saw neither team lead by more than two points until the late stages of the match. When the first set ended, Dallas Baptist (12-13, 5-2 Heartland) had emerged with the 25-21 win.
The Jets battled back in the second set, recording kills on 14 of their 47 attack attempts and holding off the Patriots for the 25-19 win to tie the match at 1-1.
DBU regained the advantage in the match in the third set, holding the Jets to a -.067 attack percentage. The Patriots controlled the third set from the start, and picked up the 25-13 third-set win.
Unphased, the Jets took the court with a purpose in the fourth set. Newman posted a match-high 18 kills while committing just five errors on 42 attack attempts, and posted a .310 attack percentage in the set en route to a 25-19 fourth-set win that tied the match at 2-2.
Saturday's fifth set resembled a sprint more than a volleyball match. Neither team appeared too interested in taking control of the match. Newman hit just .100 in the final set, while the Patriots hit at a .172 clip, but it was the Jets that left the Burg Center as the winners after a 16-14 fifth-set win.
Victoria Green led the Jets offensively in Saturday's win. The senior posted 16 kills behind a .343 attack percentage, and added three block assists.
Karol Marins and
Chelsey Potter also finished with double-digit kills. Marins posted 13 kills, and added 10 digs, while Potter finished with 12 kills and nine digs in the contest.
Ashley Myers and
Lyndsey Martini each saw action setting the ball Saturday. Myers led the Jets with 27 assists, while Martini added 25.
Amanda Savage was Newman's leading defensive player, finishing with 22 digs as one of four Jets to post double-digit dig numbers.
As a team, Newman hit .161 in the match, while the Patriots hit .167.
Kaylyn Frink led the Patriots with a 16-kill, 14-dig double double.
With the win, the Jets improve to 10-13, and 5-3 in Heartland Conference play. They return to action Thursday, hosting St. Mary's in a 7 p.m. contest inside Fugate Gymnasium.
