ODESSA, Texas -
Sade Humphrey scored back-to-back goals in the first 7:26 of the match to lift the Newman women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Texas-Permian Basin Saturday afternoon in Odessa, Texas.
Humphrey put Newman (7-7, 3-3 Heartland) on the board for the first time less than three minutes into the match, sending the rebound from a blocked corner kick past Texas-Permian Basin (3-11-1, 0-7 Heartland) keeper Alexis Frueh to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Humphrey added another goal five minutes later, taking a pass from
Amanda Knabe and breaking away from the UTPB defense before scoring from 10 yards out. The Falcons finally adjusted to Newman's offensive efforts, and held the Jets scoreless for the remainder of the first half.
The Jets started the second half the same way they started the game. Knabe found herself wide open and scored from 10 yards out to push Newman's lead to 3-0 less than four minutes into the final period. Freshman
Celia Myers put herself in the scoring column eight minutes later. A pass from
Lauren Wilson set Myers up for an un-challenged goal as Frueh left her box to attempt to break up the scoring effort. Myers' goal gave the Jets a 4-0 lead with nearly 34 minutes remaining.
UTPB answered Myers' goal less than a minute later when Sadie Moya scored from 10 yards out, but it was too little, too late as the Jets cruised to the 4-1 win.
Newman out-shot the Falcons 15-8, and put 10 shots on goal, while holding the Falcons to just three shots on goal.
With the win, the Jets improve to 7-7 on the season, and 3-3 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Thursday, hosting the St. Mary's Rattlers in a 7 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
