Jets Down Dustdevils, 2-1

Alli Zingo scored her first goal as a Jet in Newman's 2-1 win at TAMIU
LAREDO, Texas - Newman starters combined for 24 shots as the Jets women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over the Texas A&M International Dustdevils Thursday evening at Dustdevil Soccer Field in Laredo, Texas. Newman keeper Christina Farid shut-out the Dustdevils for better than 88 minutes in the win.

Newman (5-5, 1-1 Heartland) got to work early in Thursday's win. The Jets put the first goal on the board in the fifth minute when Amanda Knabe's shot deflected off Texas A&M International (4-5, 1-2 Heartland) keeper Sasha Scott, but Celia Myers was on the scene to convert the deflection into a short-range goal. Myers' goal was the only goal scored in the first half, and allowed the Jets to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Jets scored quickly when the second half started, needing less than two minutes for Allison Petrillose to connect with Alli Zingo on a long pass, which Zingo trapped and kicked into the goal from eight yards out to give Newman a 2-0 edge.

TAMIU scored its only goal of the match in the 89th minute to steal a shutout from Newman keeper Christina Farid, but it was too little, too late as the Jets held on for the 2-1 win.

Newman out-shot the Dustdevils 33-10 in the match, and was awarded four corner kicks, while TAMIU was given three. Farid allowed just one goal and recorded five saves, while TAMIU's Sasha Scott allowed two goals but scored nine saves.

With the win, the Jets move to 5-5 overall, and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against St. Mary's at STMU Soccer Field in San Antonio, Texas.
