SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Newman women's soccer team won its second-straight match Saturday afternoon, picking up a 1-0 decision over St. Mary's.
Amanda Knabe's goal in the 18th minute proved to be the difference in the match.
Newman (6-5, 2-1 Heartland) found itself in an evenly matched game Saturday afternoon, taking on a St. Mary's (6-5-1, 3-1 Heartland) squad that had won three-straight home matches, and had yet to drop a Heartland Conference match before Saturday.
The Jets used the opening minutes of the match to feel out the Rattlers, before going to work in the 18th minute. That's when
Mallory Hurst connected with
Amanda Knabe on a cross pass. Knabe took care of business, sending the ball past St. Mary's keeper Felicia Lombardo and into the upper right corner of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Newman keeper
Christina Farid shut out the Rattlers, turning away each of the four St. Mary's shots that were on goal to preserve the shutout.
St. Mary's out-shot the Jets 10-8, but Newman was able to score the only goal of the match.
With the win, the Jets improve to 6-5 overall, and 2-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday in their third-consecutive road contest, traveling to Dallas to take on the Dallas Baptist Patriots. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
