GOODWELL, Okla. - The Newman volleyball team bounced back from Thursday's loss at UTPB with a 3-0 sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at Oscar Williams Fieldhouse in Goodwell, Okla. The Jets posted a .330 hitting percentage as a team in the sweep.
Newman (9-11, 4-2 Heartland) had its hands full with the upstart Aggies early in the match. Oklahoma Panhandle State (6-16, 2-5 Heartland) forced the Jets to commit eight attack errors in the opening set, then put together a late rally to force the set to extra points before the Jets picked up the 27-25 opening-set win.
The Aggies set the tone of the second set early on. Newman trailed nearly the duration of the match before the Jets finally took a 21-20 lead before stealing a 26-24 second-set win from OPSU.
Whatever Newman head coach
Joanna Pryor told her squad in the 10-minute intermission between the second and third sets was enough to motivate Newman, which posted kills on 13 of its 24 attack attempts, and committed a match-low three attack errors in a 25-16 third-set demolition of the Aggies to secure the win.
Karol Marins led the Jets offensively with 12 kills in the contest, while
Chelsey Potter and
Victoria Green each added 10 kills of their own in the win. Potter added a team-high 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Newman used a different setter in each of its three sets Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Gabby Loxterman set 16 assists in the second set to lead the Jets, while
Ashley Myers added 11 assists in the third set.
Lyndsey Martini started the match at setter, and finished with 10 assists.
With the win, the Jets improve to 9-11 on the season, and 4-2 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m., hosting Central Oklahoma in a 7 p.m. contest at Fugate Gymnasium. Tuesday's match will be the annual "Dig Pink" breast cancer awareness match.
