WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Heartland Conference Champion Texas A&M International Friday night at Wilkins field.
Robin Allard saved five of TAMIU's six shots on goal in the loss.
Newman (3-13, 2-5 Heartland) opened the game firing two quick shots by
Nathan Nece and
Jordan Saybounkham, but both sailed wide of the net.
Texas A&M International (10-5-2, 7-1 Heartland) took their first shot of the match at the 11:15 mark, with a one-on-one short-range goal by Leonardo Ramos, to give the Dustdevils a 1-0 lead and the game winner.
The Jets had back-to-back opportunities to tie the match at the 72nd minute, with a header by
Saybounkham and short-range shot by
William Peppard, but Saybounkham's header skipped off the crossbar, and Peppard's bullet was rejected by the post.
Newman out-shot the Dustdevils 11-8.
With the loss, the Jets drop to 3-13 overall and 2-5 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets conclude their season Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against St. Mary's.
