Jets Split at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Newman baseball team picked up another win against a team receiving votes in the national poll, splitting with St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at V. J. Keefe Memorial Stadium in San Antonio. The Jets won the opener, 1-0, before dropping an 8-3 decision in game two.

Game 1: Newman 1, St. Mary's 0
MIke Williams retired 14 of the 20 batters he faced, giving up just four hits while walking two and striking out two in 5.1 innings of play, while Zach Biery added 1.2 innings of hitless baseball to secure the win for Newman. Both teams finished with four hits in the game, but Newman was the beneficiary of the only run of the contest, coming in the top of the seventh when Brandon Cox scored on a Trent Bierman single to the right-centerfield gap. Cox made the trip around the bases on errors, reached first on an errant throw by the St. Mary's third baseman, which also allowed Cox to advance to second. Cox then advanced to third on an error by the St. Mary's catcher, before scoring on the single by Bierman to help give the Jets the 1-0 win.

Game 2: St. Mary's 8, Newman 3

St. Mary's scored four runs in the bottom of the second, and never looked back on their way to an 8-3 win over Newman in Saturday's finale. Newman's big inning came in the fifth when the Jets put up three runs on four hits, but left two runners stranded. Brandon Cox notched the first hit of the inning for the Jets with a single to right. Matt Cardona followed with a double to right center to push Cox to third. An errant pitch by the Rattlers' Matt Holland pegged Jeff Oldenberg, and loaded the bases for the Jets. John Bonebrake made the most of the situation, reaching base on a single through the left side that scored Cox from third. Kori Melo followed with a single to second, scoring Oldenberg and Cardona, but the Jets' rally ended when Ryan Peterson flied out to centerfield to end the inning with the Jets traling 5-3.

The Rattlers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, and added two more in the eighth en route to the 8-3 win.

The same two teams take the field Sunday for the third and final game of the series. First pitch is slated for noon.
