LAREDO, Texas - The Newman baseball team went 2-1 over the weekend against Texas A&M International at Jorge Haynes Field in Laredo. Newman started out with a double-header sweep on Friday, winning 10-5 and 9-5, but dropped the third and final game of the series to the Dustdevils 9-6.
Game 1: Newman 10 Texas A&M Int'l 5
The Jets didn't waste any time as they drew first blood when
Brett Delcambre delivered a two-run single to center field in the top of the second inning.
John Bonebrake followed with an RBI double to right center to put the Jets up 3-0. The Dustdevils answered in the bottom half of the inning by putting up a two spot to close within one run, 3-2. Newman answered in the top of third with two runs of their own with RBI hits by both
Trent Bierman and
Brett Delcambre. The pesky Dustdevils would not go away, as they put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, to pull within one once again. The Jets wouldn't put this one away until the top of the sixth, as they put up four runs to go up 9-4.
Ryan Peterson got things started with RBI single,
Picos Soto followed with an RBI of his own, but the Jets weren't finished there, as
Brandon Cox doubled to left field, to let
Mike Williams score. The Jets added another run in the seventh inning, as
Kori Melo singled to left field, to score
Brett Delcambre. TAMIU added a final run in the bottom half with a home run over the right field wall by Rey Alvarez, but it wasn't enough to topple the Jets, who opened the series with a 10-5 win.
Game 2: Newman 9, Texas A&M Int'l 5
As in the series opener, the Jets scored first, taking advantage of a throwing error that allowed
Kori Melo to score and give the Jets an early 1-0 advantage. Newman added to its lead in the second inning, as they scored on another error by the Dustdevils to go up 2-0. TAMIU tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Jets then answered with a run in the sixth, when
Scot Palmer delivered an RBI single to left field to put Newman up 3-2. The Dustdevils answered again in the bottom half of the sixth inning with three runs off of four hits, and took a 5-3 lead. Trialing for the first time in the game, the Jets answered right back in top of the seventh inning.
Brandon Cox drilled an RBI single to right field, followed by
Matt Cardona RBI bunt single to tie the game at 5-5. Newman didn't stop there.
Scot Palmer got an RBI by scoring
Brandon Cox. The Jets finished the seventh inning by scoring three runs off four hits to put take a 6-5. Newman would extend their lead to 7-5 in the eighth with
Mike Williams RBI double to right field. The Jets added two more insurance runs to go up 9-5 when a Delcambre sacifice fly to score Cardona. An RBI single by Bonebrake then gave the Jets the 9-5 lead they would hold on to win by.
Game 3: Texas A&M Int'l 9, Newman 6
For the third-straight game, Newman scored the first run of the of the contest, as
Ryan Peterson scored on a TAMIU throwing error. The Dustdevils tied the game at 1-1, when Matt Winter delivered an RBI double to left field. In the fourth inning, Newman took a 3-1 lead after Delcambre delivered an RBI single, followed by a Peterson RBI single to right field. Newman's lead didn't last long as TAMIU put up a four spot in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Jets tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the fifth thanks to a Delcambre RBI double down the right field line. The Jets then took a 6-5 lead on a Williams RBI single in the top of the sixth. Once again the Jets lead didn't last long, as the Dustdevils answered with two runs of their own in bottom half of the sixth inning to take the lead for good. TAMIU added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to the 9-6 win.
After the 2-1 outing in Laredo, Newman stands at 5-9 on the season, and 5-8 in Heartland Conference action. The Jets will return to the field Tuesday, hosting NAIA foe Sterling College in a 7 p.m. contest at McCarthy Field.
