WICHITA - The St. Edward's Hilltoppers scored early and often on their way to a 3-1 series win over the Newman baseball team. The Jets scored 34 runs over four games, but gave up 60 runs to the Hilltoppers over the course of 28 innings.
Game 1: St. Edward's 15, Newman 11 (Thursday, Mar. 18)
The Jets dug themselves out of a 9-3 hole after four innings, putting up eight runs in the fifth inning to the the game at 11-11, but the Hilltoppers added four more runs to put the nail in the coffin.
A stiff south wind blowing straight out over the left-field fence turned McCarthy Field into a launch pad for Thursday's contests. Unfortunately for the Jets, St. Edward's was the only beneficiary in the series opener. The Hilltoppers hit three long balls en route to the win.
Picos Soto led the Newman offensive attack, finishing the series opener three-for-four with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Steven Trevino was limited to just 3.2 innings of work, giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits while walking two and stirking out four.
Zach Biery and Vince Saviano each made appearances on the mound, but
Jacob Burch was hit with the loss after pitching the final 1.2 innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on two hits.
Game 2: Newman 14, St. Edward's 13 (Thursday, Mar. 18)
Newman eliminated an 8-0 deficit in one inning, tacking seven runs on the board in the third inning, sending the game into the fourth inning trailing 8-7. St. Edward's added four more in the fourth to take a 12-7 lead, but the Jets scored seven runs over the final three innings to pick up the 14-13 win.
Brandon Cox and
Mike Williams each went three-for-five in Thursday's night-cap. Cox added three runs of his own and batted three more in, while Williams finished with two runs and 3 RBI.
Zach Biery pitched 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and allowing one run on his was to his third win of the season.
Brett Delcambre pitched one scoreless, hitless inning to pick up his first save of the season.
Game 3: St. Edward's 20, Newman 3 (Friday, Mar. 19)
St. Edward's scored three or more runs in five of the seven innings of Friday afternoon's first contest, while allowing just three Jets to cross the plate in the 20-3 blow-out win. Newman was held to just eight hits in the game.
Newman scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, but St. Edward's made their first statement with four runs in the top of the second. The Jets countered with two runs in their half of the second frame to narrow the deficit to one, 4-3, but that's as close as the game would ever be. The Hilltoppers scored 16-unanswered runs as the game turned ugly quickly.
Mike Williams was one of six Jets to make an appearance on the mound, and was tagged with his first loss of the season. Williams gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits while walking four and striking out one in 3.2 innings of work.
Game 4: St. Edward's 12, Newman 6 (Friday, Mar. 19)
The Hilltoppers did most of their damage in the second and third innings, combining for 10 runs in those two frames to establish early control of the series finale. Newman simply had no match for St. Edward's, who seemed content to score as often as possible on their way to the 12-6 win
Kenny Licea was the only thing that could stop the Hilltoppers. In his 3.1 innings on the mound, Licea gave up four hits, but did not surrender a run, while earning one strikeout.
Eric Hansen was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs (four earned) on six hits while walking four.
Kori Melo provided some highlights for the Jets at the plate, finishing two-for-four with one run scored and one run batted in.
The sweep drops Newman's record to 13-14, and drops its Heartland Conference record to 13-13. The Jets will look to rebound March 26 when Incarnate Word pays its final Heartland Conference visit to Wichita for three games, beginning with a 5 p.m. first pitch at McCarthy Field.
