Jets Sweep Dustdevils Friday

WICHITA - The Newman baseball team won its third game in four tries Friday night, picking up a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M International at McCarthy Field. The Jets rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener, then completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in the night cap.

Game 1: Newman 5, Texas A&M International 4
After spotting Texas A&M International a first inning run, Newman answered with two runs in the home half of the first. As the Jets third batter of the game, Brandon Cox spotted Newman an early lead with a home run over the right field fence. The home run also scored John Bonebrake, who reached base on a fielder's choice. After just one inning, Newman held a 2-1 lead.

The Dustdevils added another run in the second, forcing a 2-2 deadlock that remained until the fourth, when TAMIU added two more runs to take a 4-2 lead; one it held going into the seventh inning.

Newman was not ready to go down without a fight in the seventh. After watching Cox line out to center field to lead off the inning, Picos Soto snuck a single past the TAMIU third baseman, and down the left field line. A Ryan Peterson fly-out to center gave the Dustdevils hope of a win, but Scot Palmer gave the Jets another ray of hope with a single through the right side, giving the Jets runners on first and second with two outs. Mike Williams made things interesting, drawing a walk to load the bases, and leaving the game in the hands of Trent Bierman. It wasn't the prettiest of hits, but Bierman managed to thread a ball through the closing fielders on the right side, and allowed Soto and Palmer to score to give the Jets the 5-4 comeback win.

Kori Melo, Cox, Palmer, and Bierman each went two-for-four at the plate to lead the Jets offensively.

Steven Trevino improved to 5-5, picking up the win on a seven-inning complete game effort. Trevino gave up four runs (one earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.

Game 2: Newman 4, Texas A&M International 2
Mike Williams took care of business on the mound, and let the Jets offense do the work. Williams limited the Dustdevils to just one hit over the first three innings, which was all he needed as Newman plated three runs of their own to take a 3-0 lead.

Kori Melo and Ryan Peterson took the easy way on to base to set up Newman's three-run third inning. Melo was hit by a pitch, while Peterson walked to give the Jets runners on first and second with just one out. That's when Picos Soto cashed in, lining a double to right field, and advancing to third on the throw while Melo and Peterson scored Newman's first runs of the game. Soto came in to score when Palmer sent a double to right, giving the Jets a 3-0 lead.

TAMIU made things interesting with a two-run sixth inning that cut the Newman lead to 3-2, but Trent Bierman doubled, then scored on a John Bonebrake single to give the Jets the insurance run. Williams shut down the Dustdevils in the seventh to give the Jets the 4-2 win.

Palmer finished two-for-two in the game, while Melo and Bierman finished two-for-three to lead the Jets.

Williams improved to 1-2 on the season to complete Friday's sweep, throwing a seven-inning complete game while scattering two earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

After Friday's sweep, the Jets improve to 19-23 on the season, and 18-20 in Heartland Conference play, while the Dustdevils fall to 13-29 overall and 12-28 in conference action. The same two teams will face off again Saturday with a double-header slated for a noon start at McCarthy Field.
