ODESSA, Texas - Newman ended the 2010 baseball season on a high note, bouncing back from a 4-3 loss to defeat Texas-Permian Basin 9-0 Saturday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa, Texas.
Game 1: UTPB 4, Newman 3
After spotting the Falcons a run in the bottom of the first, the Newman bats came alive in the second. After watching
Picos Soto walk to open the inning,
Mike Williams moved Soto to second with a single to right field. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher by
Trent Bierman, putting two runners in scoring position for
Matt Cardona, who drilled a single to third base to score Soto, and advance Williams to third.
Cody Miller followed suit, allowing Williams to score on a single through the left side, but back-to-back fly-outs ended the inning with the Jets leading 2-1.
Neither team scored again until the sixth, when Soto again opened the inning, this time sending a triple to right center. A Williams sacrifice fly to center field sent Soto home, and gave the Jets a 3-1 lead after six innings.
UTPB wasn't going down quietly in Saturday's opener. The Falcons opened their final at-bat with back-to-back singles, and used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. At that point, Newman head coach
Zane Ehling replaced starter
Brent McKinnon with
Zach Biery, but the change didn't phase the Falcons. UTPB picked up where it left off before the pitching change. The Falcons' Kevin Enkelmann tied the game with a double up the middle, and moved to third on the throw, then was given the green light to win the game by crossing the plate on a passed ball to give UTPB the 4-3 come-from-behind win.
Soto finished two-for-two at the plate with two runs scored to lead the Newman offense. Biery was credited with the loss, giving up just one unearned run on one hit without recording an out, but giving up the lead in the process. McKinnon gave up three earned runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in 6.1 innings of work in a no-decision.
Game 2: Newman 9, UTPB 0
Newman combined a three-hit complete game performance from
Logan Clewes with a big third inning to close out the seried with a dominating 9-0 win in Saturday's season finale.
The Jets took advantage of UTPB starter Elliot Gleason's struggles, and opened the game's scoring in their first at bat.
Kori Melo walked to open the game, and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Brandon Cox followed with a walk of his own, giving Newman runners on first and second with just one out.
Picos Soto grounded out to second, but moved Melo to third in the process. Gleason then walked
Mike Williams to load the bases, before walking
Trent Bierman to force Melo across the plate. After the opening frame, Newman held a 1-0 advantage.
UTPB replaced Gleason on the mound with Rory Gray in the third inning, but the results of the change were even more favorable for the Jets.
Ryan Peterson opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Cox followed with a walk giving the Jets runners at first and second with nobody out, and forcing another Falcon pitching change. This time, UTPB elected to put Ryan Merrell on the mound, but again the Jets were unphased. Soto notched his second triple of the day with a drive to right field to score Peterson and Cox. Williams followed with a double to center field that scored Soto. Bierman followed by reaching base on a throwing error from the UTPB third baseman. Again, Newman found itself with runners on first and second with nobody out. A fielder's choice play by
Matt Cardona resulted in the Falcons' first out of the inning, but moved Williams to second base in the process. Williams then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from
Jay Hall. The Jets finished the inning with two more hits and a UTPB error en route to a seven-run inning that gave the visitors an 8-0 advantage.
All the while, Clewes kept the Falcon bats at bay. UTPB finally notched its first hit of the game in the third, but the hosts would notch just two more hits in the remainder of the game.
Newman added an insurance run in the fourth when
John Bonebrake doubled to left center to score Williams, who led off the inning by reaching base on an error at shortstop. When the dust cleared, the Jets found themselves on the winning end of a lopsided 9-0 affair to close out the season.
Peterson finished three-for-five at the plate with a run scored and two runs batted in to lead the Newman offense. On the mound, Clewes pitched the entire seven-inning contest, holding the Falcons scoreless while giving up three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
With the win, the Jets end the season with a 25-28 overall record, and a 23-24 mark in Heartland Conference play.
