Hilltoppers Blank Men's Soccer, 1-0

WICHITA - The Newman men's soccer team opened Heartland Conference play on a low note, dropping a 1-0 decision to St. Edward's Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field.

On paper, Sunday's game was about as even as it could be. Both goalkeepers tallied three saves in the game, but Newman (1-2, 0-1 Heartland) keeper Robin Allard was the victim of the only goal of the game when SEU's Joeski Williams sent a cross from Trey Perkins into the back of the net for what would amount to the game-winning goal. St. Edward's (2-1, 1-0 Heartland) turned away all of Newman's shots on goal to preserve the win.

Nicos Esquivel took a team-high three shots in the contest, and put two of them on goal, but into the waiting arms of SEU's John Kaschak. Zac Gramke had Newman's only other shot on goal.

The visiting Hilltoppers out-shot the Jets 10-8 in the contest, despite the fact that Newman was awarded eight corner kicks while SEU was given just five.

The loss drops the Jets to 1-2 on the season, and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference. Newman takes to the road this week, traveling to San Antonio, Texas to take on St. Mary's in a 3 p.m. contest on Friday.
