Jets Silence Rattlers, 1-0

Sophomore Matt McConnell scored the only goal in Newman's 1-0 win at St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Newman men's soccer team picked up its first Heartland Conference win of the season Friday night, knocking off the St. Mary's Rattlers in a 1-0 decision at the St. Mary's Soccer Field in San Antonio, Texas. Matt McConnell came off the bench to score Newman's only goal of the game.

Both teams had to endure a 25 minute pre-game lightning delay, but when the game finally started, Newman (2-2, 1-1 Heartland) found itself with just one shot on goal in the first half. That came in the 17th minute when a Will Peppard shot was saved by St. Mary's (1-2, 0-2 Heartland) keeper Patrick Kasperitis. The Rattlers, meanwhile, put three shots on goal in the first half but were unable to score on Newman's Robin Allard.

The Jets finally broke the ice just 10 minutes into the second half when Matt McConnell took a pass from Peppard and put it into the back of the goal for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Newman was out-shot 13-4 in the contest, but freshman keeper Robin Allard saved all six shots that came his way.

Friday's game was maured by yellow cards. Referee Pedro Trejo Jr. issued seven yellow cards and a red card in the contest. Newman was the recipient of four yellow cards (Nicos Esquivel, Michael Wright, Matt McConnell, Jordan Saybounkham), and the only red card of the game was issued to Newman's Marshall Johnston.

With the win, the Jets improve to 2-2 on the season, and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play. Newman heads further into southern Texas Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest against Texas A&M International in Laredo.
