WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The Newman women's soccer team opened a weekend against Lone Star Conference opponents with a 2-1 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State Friday afternoon at SWOSU Soccer Stadium in Weatherford, Okla.
Southwestern Oklahoma State (3-2) struck early in Friday night's game. and forced Newman (2-3) to play from behind for most of the game. The Bulldogs drew first blood in the fourth minute, taking a 1-0 lead on a Kira Bertrand goal from Kelsey Visor. SWSOU maintained a 1-0 lead through the halftime break.
The Bulldogs struk again in the sixth minute of the second half, this time on a left-side footer from Josie Price for an unassisted goal that gave SWOSU a 2-0 advantage.
Determined not to be shut-out, Newman looked to Sade Humphrey, who had scored both of Newman's goals of the 2010 season prior to Friday's game, for some late-game heroics. Humphrey delivered in the 87th minute, putting the Jets on the board by sending a Lauren Benning pass into the right side of the goal to narrow the SWOSU lead to 2-1. With just three minute remaining, however, Newman was unable to net the equalizer, as the hosting Bulldogs left the field with the win.
Newman out-shot Southwestern Oklahoma State 17-11 in the game. Lauren Benning took a team-high three shots, and was one of seven different Jets to take shots on goal in the game.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 2-3 on the season. They will look to rebound quickly as they face Lone Star Conference power Midwestern State at 3 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas.
