LAREDO, Texas - Battling rainy conditions for the second-consecutive game, the Newman men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Texas A&M International Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Soccer Field in Laredo, Texas.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half, but neither keeper was phased. Each turned away three shots on goal by their opposition, and sent the game into halftime scoreless.
Texas A&M International (4-2, 2-0 Heartland) struck first in the second half, needing just under two minutes for Jaime Cano to draw Newman (2-3, 1-2 Heartland) keeper
Robin Allard out of position, then sent a kick past Allard from 12 yards out to give TAMIU the early 1-0 lead.
Newman countered just over six minutes later, when
Nathan Nece drilled a shot at TAMIU keeper Emmanuel Frias. The shot was blocked by Frias, but Nece shot the rebound into the net for the equalizer.
It was the Dustdevils that got the final say in Sunday's decision, and once again Cano was the suspect. This time he converted a Luis Salas pass into a header goal from 24 yards out that gave TAMIU the 2-1 lead they went on to win by.
Just as in Thursday's contest at St. Mary's, the Jets were tagged with their share of yellow cards, this time picking up three yellow cards, while the Dustdevils were hit with three cautions.
The Jets will return to action Friday when they host Lone Star Conference power West Texas A&M in a 7 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
