WICHITA - The Newman men's soccer team dropped their third consecutive match with a 3-2 loss to Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
Things looked promising for Newman (2-5) as the Jets struck first when
Marshall Johnston headed a cross-pass from Will Peppard into the back of the net for his first goal of the season to give the Jets an early 1-0 advantage at the 28:26 mark of the first half.
Nearly five minutes later, Eastern New Mexico (7-1) evened the score at 1-1 when Emerson Rodrigues snuck a shot past Newman keeper
Robin Allard at the 33:51 mark.
It took only three minutes for Rodrigues to find the back of the goal for the second time, as he received a deflection off Allard, to put back a short-range goal that gave the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead.
ENMU added another goal at the 55:17 mark, with Kal Herbert's put back off a
Robin Allard deflection, for a 3-1 lead.
Newman's
Jordan Saybounkham did all he can to narrow the gap, adding his third goal on the season, from a
Nathan Nece cross-pass, to draw the Jets to within one goal, 3-2. That was as close as the Jets could get in the contest, as the Greyhounds snuck away with the 3-2 win.
Newman out-shot the Greyhounds 13-12, and won the battle of corner kicks, 5-4.
Robin Allard finished the match with four saves, while Eastern New Mexico's goal keeper had five saves.
With the loss, the Jets drop to 2-5 on the season. Newman returns to action Oct. 3, traveling to Northeastern State, for a 1:30 p.m. match.
