Humphrey Nets Second-Straight Game Winner at MSSU

Sade Humphrey's header in the 105th minute gave Newman a 1-0 win over Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon.

JOPLIN, Mo. - For the second time in less than 48 hours, the Newman women's soccer team found itself in a scoreless double overtime contest. And for the second time in less than 48 hours, Sade Humphrey earned hero status with a late game-winning goal as the Jets took down Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon at Hal Bodon Field in Joplin, Mo.

Missouri Southern (0-2) had the first true scoring chance of Sunday's match on a header by Michelle Dizma in the 32nd minute, but Newman (2-0) keeper Christina Farid was on the scene to make the save. Just over 12 minutes later, a scoreless first half came to an end.

Less than a minute after another Farid save in the 78th minute, Lauren Wilson found herself with her own chance to score, but this time Missouri Southern keeper Randi Russell was up to the task and ensured that the game remained scoreless. The Lions had another chance of their own inside the final minute of regulation, but Farid was unphased, and send the game to overtime.

After battling to a stalemate after the first 10 minutes of extra time, the Jets finally got what they were looking for. With just over four minutes remaining on the clock, Megan Hostick was awarded a corner kick. Her kick found Humphrey, who headed the ball past Russell and into the back of the net to give Newman its second-consecutive 1-0 win in double overtime.

Humphrey finished with two shots in the game. Her only shot on goal found the back of the net for the game winner. Lacey Alost led the Jets with four shot attempts. Alison Petrillose and Amanda Knabe each added two shots of their own in the winning effort.

Defensively, Farid posted seven saves in the game, six of which came in the second half.

With the win, the Jets improve to 2-0 on the season. They will return home Wednesday to host arch-rival Rockhurst in a 6 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field. The Hawks are 1-1 after picking up a 2-0 win at Illinois-Springfield Sunday afternoon.
