Jets Swept at Central Missouri Tri-Dual

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - A shorthanded Newman wrestling squad dropped a pair of duals Thursday evening at the Central Missouri Tri-Dual. Newman dropped a 27-18 team decision to Tiffin in the early dual, before falling to Central Missouri 25-15 in the night cap.

Tiffin 27, Newman 18
Each team opened the dual with a pair of forfeits, sending the dual into the 141 lb. bout tied at 6-6. Greg Delk gave Newman an early 9-6 advantage with an 11-4 decision over Tiffin's Lance Zappitella, but Tiffin picked a forfeit and a pair of falls in the 149-, 157-, and 165 lb. matches to take a 24-9 lead with four bouts remaining. Chandler Hart did his part to help Newman's comeback effort, picking up a 5-1 decision over Tiffin's Wallid Boggio in the 174 bout, and Tyler Hasenbank followed with a 7-1 decision over Tiffin's Joseph Miller in the 184 bout to pull Newman to within striking distance at 24-15, but Tiffin's Nathan Strickland edged Jacob Cole for a 3-2 decision in the 197 bout to put the dual out of reach for the Jets. For good measure, Lorenzo Serna earned a 6-2 decision over Tiffin's Josh Franklin in the heavyweight finale, but Tiffin came away with the 27-18 team win.

Central Missouri 25, Newman 15
Just as in the Tiffin dual, both teams opened the contest with a pair of forfeits in the 125- and 133-lb. contests, but this time Central Missouri took the early advantage after the 141-lb. match, when Marcus Walker picked up a 7-2 decision over Newman's Greg Delk. That decision was the first of three-straight victories that allowed UCM to take a 19-6 lead into the 165-lb. contest. Ryan Spencer started a comeback bid for the Jets with a 14-7 decision over UCM's Todd Brier, while Chandler Hart followed with a 5-3 decision over UCM's Justin Colver in the 174 lb. match. Tyler Hasenbank's 5-3 decision over UCM's William Ressell gave Newman some hope, pulling the Jets to within four points of UCM with two bouts remaining, but the Mules swept the 197-lb. and heavyweight matches to secure the 25-15 win.

Newman will take it's 1-3 dual record to Arlington, Texas this weekend for the Lone Star Duals.
