ARLINGTON, Texas - Considering that the Newman wrestling team was competing without one of its better wrestlers, and couldn't fill the 133 lb. weight class, and considering that two of its three opponents were ranked in the top 10 nationally, the Jets fared well at last weekend's Lone Star Duals. Newman went 1-2 at the event, defeating Central Baptist, but falling to No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 9 Central Oklahoma.
#8 Nebraska-Kearney 28, Newman 12
Newcomers Dakota Hayes and Jacob Cole picked up Newman's only wins as the Jets dropped a 28-12 decision to the eighth-ranked Lopers from Nebraska-Kearney. Hayes needed less than two minutes to pin UNK's Islam Abitov to score six points from the 157 lb. bout for the Jets, while Cole pinned UNK's Mike Swanson in the third period of the 197 lb. contest. Newman held the Lopers to four points or less in all but one match in the dual.
#9 Central Oklahoma 42, Newman 6
Jarod Stephenson and
Tyler Hasenbank combined to score all six of Newman's points in a 42-6 loss to ninth-ranked Central Oklahoma in the second dual of the event. Stephenson opened the dual with a 4-3 decision over UCO's Andrew Schmauch, while Hasenbank finished just three points shy of a major decision with a 13-6 decision over Patrick Finn in the 184 lb. bout. The Bronchos used Newman forfeits in the 133 and 149 lb. matches, and pins in the 157 and 174 lb. contests to run away with the 42-6 decision.
Newman 37, Central Baptist 18
Two depleted teams closed out Newman's final dual, and provided one of the shortest duals of the event. Newman swept the only matches that were actually wrestled, while Central Baptist picked up their points via three Jet forfeits.
Greg Delk had few problems in the 141 lb. match, picking up a 16-2 major decision over CBU's Dontavious Gardenhire, while Jacob Cole scored six easy points in the 197 lb. contest, pinning CBU's William Brooks in just 31 seconds. The closest decision of the dual came in the heavyweight contest, when
Lorenzo Serna picked up a 4-1 decision over CBU's John Lopez.
The 1-2 outing last weekend pushes Newman's record to 2-5 in dual matches this year. The Jets will return to action Thursday, traveling to Hays, Kan., for a 7 p.m. dual match against the Fort Hays State Tigers.
