WICHITA -
Haley Dotson led the Newman volleyball team to a three set sweep over Rockhurst Tuesday night in Fugate Gymnasium. Dotson posted 14 kills while hitting at a .200 clip.
The Jets fell behind in the first set 5-2 but quickly rebounded using a four point scoring run with
Amanda Savage behind the service line to take the lead 6-5. The set went back-and-fourth until
Haley Dotson led the Jets on a three point scoring run to take an 11-8 lead. Rockhurst answered back, tying the set 18-18 and again at 21-21 but Newman used a kill by
Jeana Farruggia to spark a three point run to win the set 25-21.
Newman used kills by
Farruggia,
Dotson,
Katelyn Schmidtberger and
Karol Marins to jump out to an 11-6 lead to begin the second set. Rockhurst capitalized on three Jets' errors and two kills by Maggie Hummel to tie the set 14-14. The Jets responded with a five point scoring run behind two
Farruggia kills, a
Dotson ace and two Hawks' errors to reclaim the lead 19-14. The Hawks were able to battle back thanks to four kills by Maggie McGovern and three errors by the Jets to eventually tie the set 24-24. After a timeout, Newman quickly claimed the set with kills from
Farruggia and
Dotson to win 26-24.
The third set was a back-and-fourth affair until Newman pulled ahead 16-12. Rockhurst fought back with a five point scoring run to overtake the Jets 17-16. Newman responded with kills from
Schmidtberger,
Farruggia and
Marins to tie the set 23-23 and used a
Dotson kill and a
Schmidtberger/
Marins block assist to win the match with a 25-23 third-set victory.

Haley Dotson led the Jets with 14 kills and a .200 hitting percentage followed closely by
Jeana Farruggia with 13 kills.

Gabby Loxterman set 40 of Newman's 45 assists and added three kills and seven digs in the match.

Kristen White led the team with 15 digs followed by
Katelyn Schmidtberger (13) and
Amanda Savage (11).
- The Jets improved their hitting percentage with each set; hitting .154 in the first, .176 for the second and .222 in the third set.
With the win the Jets improve to 3-13 on the season. They will return to action Thursday against Heartland Conference foe Texas-Permian Basin in Fugate Gymnasium at 7 p.m..
