Dotson's Career High Leads Jets Past OPSU

WICHITA - Haley Dotson posted a career high 26 kills as the Jets won their first Heartland Conference game of the season with a four-set win over Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday inside Fugate Gymnasium. Dotson hit a career high .523 in the match.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair until Oklahoma Panhandle State used four Newman errors and a April McCain service ace to jump out to a 14-10 lead. The Jets responded with a five point run of their own using two blocks and kills from Megan Holick and Karol Marins to take a 15-14 lead. The Aggies came back with a six point run on four Newman errors and a kill by Hanna Syling to pull ahead 20-15. Newman fought back pulling as close as 22-20 but OPSU won the set with a Breanna Drayer kill, 25-21.

Newman came out much stronger in the second set using four Aggie errors and kills by Marins, Haley Dotson and Jeana Farruggia to jump out to a 11-5 lead. After spotting OPSU's Breanna Drayer a kill to pull the Aggies back within five, 11-6, Newman used a 13-3 run to take a 24-9 lead late in the set. OPSU refused to quit using a five point run to get within ten, 24-14, but a Dotson kill ended the set, 25-14.

The third set remained close until the Jets used a five point run with kills by Gabby Loxterman and Dotson to brake a 12-12 tie and take the lead 17-12. The Aggies tried to fight back coming as close as 18-14, but Newman maintained control and used four OPSU errors and kills by Dotson, Loxterman and Farruggia to win the set 25-15.

It was much of the same in the fourth set with Newman using kills by Marins, Loxterman and Dotson to jump out to a 10-5 lead. OPSU fought back using kills by Hanna Syling and Breanna Drayer to get as close at 12-10 but the Jets never backed down, winning the set 25-18.

- Newman's Haley Dotson posted a career high 26 kills in the contest and finished with a .523 hitting percentage.
- Jeana Farruggia was next in line with 12 kills on the day and a .320 hitting percentage.
- Gabby Loxterman set 50 of Newman's 55 assists while adding six kills in the contest.
- Kristen White led the Newman defense with 19 digs followed by Katelyn Schmidtberger and Michelle O'Dell with nine each.
- Newman posted a .531 team hitting percentage in the deciding set.

With the win Newman improves to 4-14 on the season and 1-5 in Heartland Conference play. They will travel to Edmond, Okla. on October 11th to take on Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m..
