AUSTIN, Texas - The Newman baseball team was dealt its second-straight three-game sweep last weekend, dropping a three-game series to the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. Newman opened the series with an 8-2 loss, then followed that with an 8-3 loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Sunday, the Hilltoppers sent Newman home with a 2-0 loss.
Game 1: St. Edward's 8, Newman 2
St. Edward's pitcher Jeff Rohrbach kept Newman hitters on their heels in the opening innings of Saturday's first game. Rohrback kept the Jets off the board through four innings. Finally, in the fifth inning, the Jets' bats woke up.
Scot Palmer opened the inning with a single down the left field line, then advanced to third after
Thomas Robulack doubled to the left-centerfield gap. Palmer then scored thanks to a
Brett Delcambre sacrifice fly to center, giving the Jets their first run of the series. Robulack would be rewarded for his double when he scored off a botched fielding attempt by SEU's Will McCaleb, but that was where Newman's offense ended. The Hilltoppers scored in each inning on their way to the 8-2 win.
Newman starter Gage Daniels lasted just 2.2 innings on the mound, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in the process.
Patrick Redlin and Jacob Furr each saw time on the mound in the game as well. Furr was the only one able to slow down the Hilltopper bats, finishing the final 1.2 innings without surrendering a hit.
As a team, the Jets finished with two runs on five hits, but committed four errors in the contest.
Game 2: St. Edward's 8, Newman 3
Newman spotted SEU two first-inning runs, and two more in the fourth, but couldn't find their rhythm offensively in the first seven innings of Saturday's night cap. Finally, in the eighth inning, the Jets made their move. Newman tagged SEU reliever Weslee Schmitz for three runs on two hits in the top of the eighth inning. It all started when Ben Wagner singled through the right side, then advanced to second on a wild pitch from Schmitz. Schmitz then walked David Longmore, before giving up a bomb to Corey Cowan that pulled Newman to within one run, 4-3.
That was as close as Newman could get in the contest. The Hilltoppers countered with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth and ran away with the 8-3 win.
Brandon Droge went 7.1 innings on the hill for Newman, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking four and striking out four.
Game 3: St. Edward's 2, Newman 0
Two early big hits led to two Hilltopper runs as St. Edward's completed the three-match sweep with a 2-0 win over the Jets Sunday afternoon.
Newman pitcher
Kyle Burkhardt gave up a single to open the contest. That single turned into a run when SEU's next batter sent a triple to right center to give the Hilltoppers an early 1-0 run. Burkhardt recovered by striking out the side with minimal damage, and faced a 1-0 deficit after one inning.
The Hilltoppers added another run in the second, this time in the form of a one-run home run that gave the hosts a 2-0 lead after two innings, but again, Burkhardt bounced back by silencing the SEU bats with minimal damage.
Newman recorded seven hits in the contest, but couldn't put a run across the plate in the 2-0 loss.
Burkhardt threw seven complete innings in the contest, giving up seven hits while walking two and striking out five. He was relieved in the eighth by Jacob Furr, who retired the side in order.
With the loss, Newman falls to 0-6 on the season. The Jets will return to action Wednesday, traveling to Emporia for a 2 p.m. contest against the Emporia State Hornets.
