Jets Fall Short at No. 7 Emporia State, 6-5

EMPORIA, Kan. - A ninth-inning triple eliminated any hopes of an upset bid, as No. 7 Emporia State handed the Newman baseball team its seventh-straight loss with a 6-5 decision Wednesday evening at Glennen Field in Emporia.

Newman (0-7) didn't waste any time getting things started. A Ben Wagner single through the left side opened the Jets' offense in the game. Wagner advanced to second on a David Longmore single to left-center. Ryan Engrav drew a walk on Newman's next at-bat to load the bases before Corey Cowan sent a deep fly ball to center field, allowing Wagner to score from third on the sacrifice fly to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead. But Emporia State (1-0) turned a routine ground ball from Scot Palmer into a double-play to end the inning with minimal damage.

The Jets extended their lead by one run in each of the next two innings. A second-inning solo home run from Brett Delcambre gave Newman a 2-0 lead after two innings, then David Longmore, who was hit by a pitch as the second batter of the third inning, scored when Palmer grounded out to third base. After three innings, Newman held a 3-0 lead on the nation's seventh-ranked team.

Emporia State needed just one inning to make up their lost ground. After giving up just a run early in the third inning, Newman looked to be out of the inning with a 3-1 lead, but a throwing error from Cowan with two outs left two Hornets on base. ESU's next batter, Joe Vaskas, doubled to left center to score both runners, leaving the game tied at 3-3 after three innings.

The Hornets added two more runs in the fourth inning, taking a 5-3 lead thanks to a two-run home run by Zach Carlson, but the Jets weren't finished just yet. With two outs, Mike Williams sent a double down the right field line, giving Newman runners on second and third. A Jake Gaul single through theleft side scored both williams and Delcambre, who walked before Williams' at-bat. After six innings, the game was tied, 5-5.

Newman kept the Hornets at bay for the next two innings, but two swings of the bat spelled doom for the Jets in the bottom of the ninth. Carlson opened the inning with a deep fly ball to right center. Newman centerfielder David Longmore gave chase, but lost his footing on the Glennen Field warning track, which consisted of a wet mud due to three days-worth of snow melt. Longmore was unable to complete the play, and Carlson was credited with a triple. One batter later, ESU's Kevin Wempe singled to right-center field, allowing Carlson to cross the play for the 6-5 Hornet win.

Ben Wagner went 2-for-5 with a run in the game, while Jake Gaul finished 2-for-4 at th eplate, adding two RBI in the process. Newman starter Logan Clewes threw 3.1 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking one.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 0-7 on the season. They will look to rebound Friday when they host their first home series of the season, welcoming Oklahoma Panhandle State to Wilkins Field for a three-game series starting at 4 p.m.
