Jets Down OPSU for First Win of 2011, 6-3

WICHITA - Brandon Droge pitched the Newman baseball team to its first win of the 2011 season, as the Jets downed Oklahoma Panhandle State 6-3 Friday afternoon at McCarthy Field. Droge pitched the entire nine-inning contest.

Oklahoma Panhandle State (2-5, 0-4 Heartland) made the first move, tagging Newman (1-7, 1-6 Heartland) starter Brandon Droge for three-straight hits, which resulted in a pair of runs that gave the Aggies a 2-0 advantage before the Jets even had a chance at the plate.

Newman countered with back-to-back three-run innings to take control of the game. Scot Palmer's solo home run opened the second inning in a big way. Jordan Ollenberger and Brett Delcambre followed with back-to-back singles, and each scored before the inning was over. By the end of the second inning, the Jets owned a 3-2 lead.

The Jets kept it rolling in the third inning. Thomas Robulack opened Newman's offense in the inning with a single up the middle, then advanced to third on two-straight walks to load the bases. Jake Gaul took advantage of the ducks on the pond, sending a two-run single through the right side, scoring both Robulack and Ollenberger. Delcambre scored on a David Longmore single to right-center to give Newman a 6-2 lead after three innings.

OPSU's only answer came in the fourth, but the Aggies could muster only one run on two hits in that frame as the Jets went on for the 6-3 win.

Newman starter Brandon Droge was the only Jet to see action on the mound in Friday's game. Droge gave up three earned runs on nine hits while walking just one and striking out five in the complete game effort.

David Longmore finished as Newman's most productive bat, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in the game.

With the win, the Jets improve to 1-7 on the season, and 1-6 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets will wrap up their three-game series with OPSU Saturday with a double-header starting at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
